Mitsubishi Electric Aims to Expand Flash Memory Biz in 2000 January 26, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Mitsubishi Electric Corp. announced its future strategy to expand production of flash memory units. According to the company, future plans center on specializing in flash memory products targeted at the portable telephone industry, an area where Mitsubishi Electric has already successfully garnered a significant share of the market, and on working to expand both the level of production and the value of the units produced. As a result of the new strategy, Mitsubishi Electric says it should be able to corner a 30 percent share of the total world market for flash memory products, and thereby establish itself as one of the top three global players in the field. In concrete terms, the company aims to boost production from the level at the end of 1999, when monthly output was the equivalent of five million 16Mb flash memory units, to a monthly output of 10 million units by the end of this year, and then 20 million units by the end of 2001. The value of the company's flash memory production in fiscal year 1999 (April 1999 - March 2000) will be around 46 billion yen, but the new strategy calls for that to be increased to between 65 billion and 70 billion yen in fiscal 2000, and then rise to 100 billion yen in fiscal 2001. (105.08 yen = US$1) In order to actually be able to achieve the objectives of the new plan, Mitsubishi Electric intends to play on its strengths, which include low power static random access memory (SRAM), high density packaging and large capacity divided bit-line NOR (DINOR) flash memory technologies. By combining these technologies, the company plans to be able to manufacture ideal flash memory products for the mobile devices market, with the emphasis on the portable telephone sector.
