Sierra Wireless' shares dipped C$4.25 to C$81 on the Toronto Stock Exchange in mid-afternoon trading before trading in the shares was halted.
The company's shares have risen dramatically since their initial public offering at C$14.25 in May 1999.
Investors' enthusiasm for the company's wireless technology exploded after Sierra signed a $30-million licensing agreement with Metricom Inc. (NasdaqNM:MCOM ) this past November. Metricom is 49 percent owned by Microsoft Corp. co-founder Paul Allen and 38 percent by MCI WorldCom Inc.
In December, Sierra announced a $30-million multiyear deal with U.S. phone giant AT&T Corp. to supply the wireless network operation of AT&T with wireless data products. Investors viewed the deal as yet another endorsement of Sierra's technology.
