I have heard on numerous occasions that QCOM has a 'lock' on CDMA but I've also heard much noise to the contrary (e.g. IDC's claims).

How does IDC's CDMA patents, B-CDMA work etc... on current projects come into play? IDC claims that QCOM 'stole' many of their CDMA patents but in the resulting judgment both were given equal access to the patents. QCOM turned around and licensed the IDC work and their own CDMA patents (or so the story goes). IDC claims they will be back in the game when the 3rd generation of wireless comes out as a) QCOM's rights to IDC's patents expire then and b) it's a whole new ballgame and a new CDMA standard will be selected. That standard is being worked on now in a joint consortium if I remember the story correctly. I believe I copied down a good deal of IDC's claims somewhere but don't have them at my fingertips (where is my e-book instant cross link index when I need it!).

Are you knowledgeable about any of this and can you comment?
