Nortel rings up record quarter and year; overwhelms street expectations

TUESDAY, JANUARY 25 2000 4:41 PM EST

BRAMPTON, Ont., Jan 25, 2000 (The Canadian Press via COMTEX) -- Nortel Networks has
reported sharp increases in quarterly and year-end operating earnings but a net loss of $197
million US for all of 1999.

Revenue for the year increased 26 per cent to $22.22 billion US, and operating earnings
rose to $1.73 billion from $1.07 billion the year before.

Costs related to Nortel's series of acquisitions and one-time charges resulted in the
$197-million net loss.

For the fourth quarter, revenue increased 21 per cent from a year earlier to $6.99 billion
US, while operating earnings per share were up 53 per cent to $755 million, or 55 cents per
share.

That earnings-per-share figure handily eclipsed the consensus analyst estimate of 41cents.

''We are extremely pleased with our strong growth in the fourth quarter, '' said John Roth,
chief executive officer of Canada's most valuable company, which reports in U.S. dollars.

''Our strong financial performance with carrier and service provider customers reflected our
leadership position in creating the high-performance Internet.''
