The problem is that the PCI serial controller driver does not want to be installed.

Are you saying you have a separate PCI card with a serial I/O controller? Or do you mean the serial I/O controller built into the motherboard? How many serial interfaces do you have?

Does your BIOS find your serial interface when you boot up?
