Not to mince words, but the article you posted mentions 'server' and the future of same in the broadest of scopes. As defined, this term can include virtually any node (device) on a network. PCs, Household appliances and palm pilots all could be 'servers'. The market that ANCR is driving looks more like the conventional large scale file servers (include mainframes too) that we have now. The idea being to engineer the network access of disk away from the processor(s) on one single file server and making it available at the switch (hub) level for all requesters. Bottom line- fast access to scalar and super scalar disk, by any a large number of requesting clients, therby removing the bottleneck of the server itself (Disk access speed in a server is currently a big bottleneck). The article you posted sounds like it may be a rollerskate to train comparison. Both are transportation so, why don't we save money and have those 16 ton blocks delivered by a couple of kids on skates? Transportation is loosly defined in my example and the scale is way off (the kids probably wouldn't fare well either). I guess I'm wondering if your article is completely germane to ANCR. Not to say that ANCR is not motivated, just that the premise of the article wouldn't be very compelling as a motivator. My premise would be that business consolidation, all these mergers and acq.'s, would be more motivating. The databases for Time-Warner (et. al.) are huge and growing. They are now bigger with their latest acquisition. They would have the money and interest to purchase big accessible disk (on a zippy medium like say FC) to house (and deliver) the big data. Otherwise, they have lots of little databases and extra processing time. The time and effort saved by not having a lot of small systems combining the small databases is what pays for the ANCR products. Big I/O without all the small system purchase, setup and optimization. If FC can meet the challenge, cha-ching for ANCR. -Sofa Kingdom
