Channel distribution is something I don't pretend to understand, with all the brokers out there. But one place I like to check is www.cmpexpress.com, which I think just drop ships from Ingram Micro. Go to www.cmpexpress.com, click "brands" in the upper level, then I , then Intel Processors.If you click on the number in the "qty" column they give you some kind of real time inventory thing. On that front, anyway, the PIII supply looks pretty grim all over the board. The 500E shows 20K backordered, the 550E only 6K. Beats me, and I can't say for absolute certain that these are Ingram Micro numbers, but they're large enough that they have to be coming from some big distributor, not just a web storefront.
