Mindmeld, NT has an equivalent, wholly owned operation called Bell Northern Research which is a Canadian equivalent of Bell Labs that Lucent owns.

Bell Northern Research is a HUGE collection of scientists, R&D propeller heads and engineering design staff that are tops in Canada and compare favourably to BellLabs. Remember, NT made it's mark in US carrier market in the 70's with the first all digital C.O. switch which allowed them to take huge market share away from LU from starting point of zero market share.

NT needed Bay because of TIME issue..........Roth correctly recognized that even if Nortel could have developed Routing technology internally for the Enterprise, he could not wait -- time is money -- huge money these days. The technology transfer is probably pretty well done and there are more than able R&D, and engineering staff at Nortel and Bell Northern to take Bay platform and make it far more robust, scaleable, integrateable ............

Bay assets have been realized and I don't see huge risks even if some of the ex-bay guys have sold their chips and retired. They are all probably burned-out anyway!
