New IBM Workstations Hammer Tough Real-World Problems
Business Wire - January 25, 2000 13:02

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 25, 2000--

IBM Debuts Industry's First UNIX Workstations with Copper Microprocessors;

New IntelliStation NT Workstations Solve e-business Challenges
IBM today announced dramatically new IntelliStation(a) NT (R)-based workstations and the first UNIX(b)-based workstations with copper processors.

The systems strengthen a large family of workstations designed to solve tough computing problems such as automobile crash simulations, stress failure analysis and non-linear video editing.

The new workstations also demonstrate IBM's ability to support companies integrating both UNIX- and Windows(c) NT-based workstations in heterogeneous environments. Many design, visual production and engineering departments rely on both types of workstations, or use Windows NT-based workstations with UNIX-based servers, a trend expected to continue.

"DaimlerChrysler recently chose the IBM IntelliStation as our standard NT-based engineering workstation for several reasons," says Norm Powell, engineering manager at the DaimlerChrysler Technical Computing Center in Auburn Hills, Mich. "Offering superior performance, the IntelliStation allows us to handle CAD/CAE (Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Engineering) and Office Applications in a single seat. Another reason we chose the IBM solution is that we'll be using the IntelliStation in combination with our large contingent of UNIX-based RS/6000s, and IBM can help us integrate them."

The announcements were made at IBM's PartnerWorld 2000 event in San Diego, Calif.

New IBM IntelliStations

The IBM IntelliStation Z Pro features a completely new design, developed for the manipulation of large quantities of data quickly, and incorporates the highest performance components available. Faster processors, wider memory channels, and faster memory means designers can develop concepts more quickly and share them more easily with colleagues in networked development environments. It features the Intel(d) Pentium(d) III Xeon(d) processor at speeds ranging from 667 to 800 MHz (1), a 133 MHz front-side bus, and up to 2 gigabytes of RAMBUS ECC memory (4 gigabytes with upcoming memory modules). It also features a fast new Ultra SCSI subsystem at 160 megabytes per second, enabling quick access to data on hard drives, and a 64-bit, 66 MHz PCI bus that doubles the speed and bandwidth of the previous Z Pro. The Z Pro is tested to work with a large number of graphics adapter cards, including the new high-performance, value-priced ELSA GLoria II (2) and the new Intense3D Wildcat 4110 (3).

Mechanical features have been enhanced to improve scaleability, including rack-mount capability, four cooling fans, nine bays and seven slots, and a 490-watt power supply, all of which simplify future growth and expansion.

IBM also will soon announce improvements for other IntelliStation models. The IntelliStation M Pro will feature up to two Intel Pentium III processors at up to 800 MHz, fast new ATA66 EIDE hard disk drives, and compatibility with the new ELSA GLoria II graphics card with 64 megabytes of video memory. And the low-cost IntelliStation E Pro will feature the Pentium III processor at up to 800 MHz and compatibility with the new ELSA GLoria II graphics card, in a slim desktop design.

IBM is extremely focused on information security and its IntelliStations feature the industry-leading embedded Security Chip, which helps protect confidential and valuable information such as new product designs, prototypes, and other intellectual property. IntelliStations also offer industry-leading manageability features that help customers lower their total cost of systems ownership, focus more attention on their business and applications, and spend less time running their network. These management technologies include Wake on LAN, Asset ID (7), Alert on LAN, SMART Reaction, and LANClient Control Manager 2.5.1, which help customers deploy and keep track of their PC inventories, monitor system outages and/or tampering, perform automatic data backup, and remotely manage their systems.

Looks like they are too late (just sampling).
