SI now has a handy button for ignoring posters that drift off the topic, or don't succeed in locating it in the first place. With a title like "Market Direction Discussion," it seems appropriate to stick to the topic of market direction rather than branch into specific stocks, the topic of most threads.

If you wanted a simple way to keep the list on-topic, you could just post a list of people you recommend to ignore. It would be purely a recommendation, but it would give the people who wish to stay on topic a bit of leverage over those who are tempted to veer. Good discussion groups on the internet are notoriously prone to being dominated by off-topic chats. What doesn't work is to try to control people's posting; they'll claim it's the free world and in fact nobody can stop anybody. But the host of the thread, if you could be convinced to resume that role, could publish a gentle suggestion to ignore that would be quite effective.
