Globe says Newbridge mum on sale of division

Newbridge Networks .... In the News
The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Jan. 26, edition that
Newbridge Networks would not comment yesterday on reports that it is
considering selling off one of its most important product divisions. The
Globe's Business Report column says The Financial Times reported on its Web
site that Newbridge is contemplating selling its digital subscriber line
(DSL) division. "It would make sense," says Paul Weinstein, an analyst at
Credit Suisse First Boston. Newbridge spokesperson Sarah Miller said the
company does not comment on rumours. However Newbridge confirmed that it is
set to announce a $16-million contract to supply DSL equipment to Eircom
PLC, Ireland's national phone company. DSL gear allows phone companies to
offer television, movies and music on demand, as well as high-speed
Internet access and telephone service -- all through traditional copper
lines. Ms. Miller said the contract could expand to be worth about
$200-million over the next few years.
