Major manufacturers expected to invest $1.5 billion in TFT-LCD development projects In line with global expansion in the production of liquid crystal display (LCD) screens, major Korean manufacturers are expected to increase facilities investments by 35.8 percent year-on-year, to total 1.7 trillion won ($1.5 billion), the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said yesterday. Samsung Electronics, LG Phillips LCD and Hyundai Electronics are Korea's major producers of LCD screens. The global market for LCDs was scaled at just $8.4 billion in 1998, the ministry said. But demand is expected to double this year to $16.6 billion, following a surge in sales of laptop computers and mobile communications equipment, the ministry said. To meet the rising demand, Japan and Korea - the world's largest producers of LCDs - each invested $1.1 billion to increase production facilities in 1999. As of last year, Japan accounted for 65 percent of the global LCD market, while Korea accounted for 35 percent. The spending increase will boost Japan's LCD output to 583,000 LCD screens per month, from 563,000 last year, the ministry said. Korea's monthly LCD output will rise to 341,000 screens per month, compared with 306,000 last year. Meanwhile, Taiwanese manufacturers, who brought in Japanese technology for LCD production since 1998, have increased spending to step up output, the ministry said. This year, as a result, Japan's share of the global LCD market will fall to 56 percent, while Korea will see its share fall to 33 percent, the ministry said. Taiwan's share will amount to 11 percent this year. Japanese manufacturers are expected to boost production capacity of large screen LCDs for monitors and TVs this year, while Korean producers are expected to shift their focus from small and mid-sized LCDs to larger versions, the ministry said. A majority of Taiwan's investments will be centered on the production of small and mid-sized LCDs for laptop computers, the ministry said. The ministry projected Korea's LCD exports this year to total $5 billion, up 35.1 percent from 1999.koreaherald.co.kr
