T's Canadian subsidiary has an EDGE deal with Ericy... though AT&T is now relaunching the ill-fated Pocketnet based on the separate PCDC data network. I think Nokia's 7160 will debut a more sophisticated TDMA text message service over AT&T's network at a low data speed this spring. AT&T hasn't made many public mobile data announcements yet, though they seem to intend to spend 3,8 billion dollars on mobile networks this year. You'd think this much dough has to include some data upgrade stuff.

It's going to be interesting to see what AT&T's localization service plan is. The biggest buzz in Europe is right now about new technologies enabling mobile operators to pinpoint the whereabouts of any mobile phone in use. This can now be achieved mainly by upgrading network software - which is far cheaper and more convenient than using the GPS approach. That demands expensive extra hardware.

It's possible that the localization feature is going to underpin much of the future M-commerce development. One reason why Cellpoint has appreciated by 2'000% recently. We might see another global division of mobile technology standards - USA going with GPS and cutting itself out of the international mainstream. This might have a big impact on the M-commerce software and service market development.
