Tench,

Re:"speed bins and cat and mouse"

Well I agree the cat and mouse stuff is about as DUMB as you can get.

I have no idea on speeds from Austin or dresden, although I do keep hearing rumours. Even AMD's management has basically stated they can announce faster speed grades.

If so, this is the greatest OPPORTUNITY lost by any hi-tech company in recent memory.

But AMD has been know to do dumb things so who the hell knows.

Being first to the 1Ghz barrier is a big deal, and it would get FREE PRESS for months and also change market perceptions on AMD.

regards,

Kash

Tenchusatsu,

<I've always said that AMD really can't afford to play a stupid cat-n-mouse game. >

Well, clearly you have an opinion - as does everyone.

<That's why I think they're having a tougher time scaling Athlon up the frequency scale than many people here realize.>

When you were "thinking", have you considered:

- Gateway's high profile defection? Do you think Gateway moved to AMD if they do not believe AMD has a credible roadmap that is as good or better than Intel's?

- Demonstration of 900MHz room - temperature parts several months back? And, Jerry's comments in the earnings call that AMD is not pushing MHz and already has product better than 900MHz.

- The wide availability of Athlon 800s from all over the place? Jerrys comments about "wide" sampling of the 850s?

If you did not consider these things, does the above data change your thinking? If not, could you enlighten us what your thinking and the resulting conclusion is based on?

Chuck

Either that, or the rumors you are hearing really is crap. I've always said that AMD really can't afford to play a stupid cat-n-mouse game. That's why I think they're having a tougher time scaling Athlon up the frequency scale than many people here realize..

Tenchusatsu, where are your links to back up what clearly appears to be an inappropriate and negative view of the Athlon's scalability?
