Scientific-Atlanta in $100 mln deal with Charter


ATLANTA,, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Scientific-Atlanta Inc. <SFA.N> said Tuesday it signed a $100 million deal with cable television system operator Charter Communications Inc. <CHTR.O> to supply optical equipment and digital cable TV set-top boxes.

The deal features a series of agreements, including the upgrade of 20,000 miles of Charter's cable network, new fiber optic products and the purchase of 126,000 Explorer 2000 and Explorer 3000 set-top boxes during the first half of 2000.

The company said the network upgrade is part of the initial phase of Charter's three-year plan to upgrade 135,000 miles of its cable network.

The upgrade includes installation of Scientific-Atlanta's latest fiber optic products, which allow for faster delivery of digital interactive services such as Internet TV, video on demand, electronic commerce and telephony.

The company said 75 percent of the 126,000 digital set-tops to be bought by Charter will be Scientific-Atlanta's Explorer 3000 set-tops, which allow for faster processing of video and applications and high resolution graphics, as well as memory for applications like e-mail, Web browsing and games.

To date, Charter has received more than 76,000 Explorer 2000 set-tops and has installed Scientific-Atlanta's digital interactive networks in 17 of its cable systems.

Charter also offers Scientific-Atlanta's digital interactive services to nearly 1 million of its subscribers.

Shares of Scientific-Atlanta rose 2-9/16 to close at 72-1/2 on the New York Stock Exchange, while Charter shares fell 11/16 to close at 18-1/16 on the Nasdaq stock market.

brk hypermart as you must know (unless you have been in the clouds somewhere) has authorize.net to handle this ...tell your friend to contact them directly as they are the best product on the market...me being a gnet shareholder does not make me biased in this assessment....don't tell him there are some start up fees that certain unnamed competitors do not charge and pretty much offer the same product from what I can see...not having actually done billing over the web I really don't know which product works best but since we are pushing gnet here why not just sell him on authorize.net for your fellow gnet longs

In addition to billing, hypermart has a bunch of features organized in one place for the small businessman that are either already there or being added...these stat features from mycomputer.com are relatively new and now a working integrated feature on hypermart.....although there is a billing start up fee from authorize.net I think it is probably worth it...you might ask urlman as he uses a competing service for billing for some reason (I think the start up fee) and also uses hypermart for hosting and other reasons......heres what it says about this stat feature on the hypermart site
