Lucent flexes its software muscles

NEW YORK. 3:25 PM EST-Last quarter was a bummer for Lucent Technologies (nyse: LU). Earnings were low and analysts kept slamming the company for its lack of data networking know-how. But Lance Boxer, president of Lucent's Communications Software Group, is betting he can turn to its software store, its Bell Labs dowry, to pull the telecom supplier out of its slump.
