Just a shorthand way of indicating that some bulls were looking for a higher number.

The real question I had was that given the excuses presented for the shortfall (including a shortfall in anticipated Y2K rollover to the tune of $500 million in revenue) and a constrained environment for semiconductor supply ($300 million in lost sales), when should they have had the basics of this announcement?

If Y2K rollover revenue was in fact to be booked before the end of the year or at least a substantial part of it (which makes a great deal of sense), then the order tracking computers at Dell should have had the basics of this information some time ago.

Does anyone know how Dell anticipated the order flow from Y2K? I recall Michael Dell speaking about the subject last summer, expecting a surge of orders towards year end as users saw the need to upgrade, but I don't recall any specifics.

As I pondered that question, I found the year-end and early January insider sales of some interest.

Academic interest only. I still don't have a position in the company (long or short).

Dell in the mid $30's represents a 35% retracement in under a month. I'd say this quarter's miss will be well factored-in at that point. I'm buying tomorrow into all of this emotional backlash selling. Dell's credibility is shaken slightly but not undone. The numbers don't look that bad at all to me.
