Good acting requires reaching deep inside to find the
parts of oneself that enrich the role, that evoke in
the audience the visceral sense that one IS who one
pretends to be. Only when one does this can one convince
an audience authentically. Without conveying a
sense of inner strength and identity with the role, the
audience will lose interest and consider the actor a poser
who only mimics authority. For example, an inexperienced
actor, say a student, may play the role of police officer
but convey the authority only of cross-walk monitor. The
trick is to choose those roles that stretch one's abilities
without exceeding them to such a degree that credibility is
lost.
