GartnerConsulting to Study the Dynamics for the Supply and Demand for Flash Memory

January 27, 2000

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 26, 2000 via NewsEdge Corporation -

Vendors and Users of Flash Memory to Be Surveyed Globally

GartnerConsulting, a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE: IT), announced today that it is planning an in-depth multiclient study to examine the global market for the supply and demand for flash memory.

Digitization and the proliferation of Internet-access-enabled electronic equipment means that future demand for higher-density flash memory is assured. Without significant new capital investment by vendors, demand cannot be satisfied, posing a problem for flash memory users.

Since GartnerGroup's Dataquest began tracking the flash memory marketplace in the early 1990s, the industry has matured to the extent that the first full industry cycle has occurred. This study will examine pressing issues of interest to both flash memory vendors and users, including what products will drive demand, how this demand is likely to change, and when supply will be able to meet demand.

Despite explosive demand during the past three years, market revenue has not grown due to the glut of supply, resulting in weak prices. Now an increasing number of electronic products that are manufactured in high volume require flash memory. This is causing the market to become critically undersupplied, due to the lack of investment by vendors. Rising prices and allocation are now established as the dominant features of the market. The resulting planning for both costs and manufacture is a major issue for user organizations.

As this shortage begins to impact the market, electronic equipment manufacturers need to better understand the situation and manage their business based on sound information.

Sponsorship opportunities for this project are limited. The study, which is scheduled to begin in March 2000, will research the demand and supply dynamics for flash memory, on a quarterly basis, for a full year. Results will be published on a quarterly basis. The study findings will be made available only to the sponsors. For more information on participating in this study, contact: Richard Prideaux GartnerConsulting for the Technology Marketplace Tel: +44-1784-487166 Fax: +44-1784-488748 E-mail: richard.prideaux@gartner.com. Benefits of participation

Consistent qualitative and quantitative information, provided on a quarterly basis, about the fast-moving flash memory market will enable semiconductor vendors and users to better understand the drivers and dynamics of the supply and demand for flash memory products. By participating in the study, sponsors can: -- Better understand flash memory shipments and capacity, and

measure the impact of new investments. -- Receive data on the supply/demand dynamics, and track industry

capability vs. market expectations. -- Identify upcoming market sectors, and receive forecasts of their

future importance. -- Receive supply/demand forecasts that provide pricing outlooks,

enabling future profitability and ROCE to be estimated. About GartnerGroup
