Pat, thanks for the review of the CC. You seemed to have got it all.

I was pleased that 'metro buildout' was mentioned several times. It is my understanding that different equipment is required than for 'long haul' and certainly I want JDSU to be a major player in this area.

I was a little disappointed in Joseph's response to the R&D breakout question concerning the acquisitions. I would have hoped to hear more detail. In the ETEK CC, KK mentioned that one big advantage to doing these acquisitions is that duplicate research can be eliminated thus freeing up hard to find research talent for new products. I continue to feel that research is critical to maintaining the technological edge required to succeed in the long term given the number of startups in this area and the fact that LU/NT/TXN/Corning are all working in this area and have very deep pockets. For example, the pure optical switch is extremely important and no guidance was given in this area.

Finally, one last concern of mine in the 'long haul' area was not discussed. It is my understanding that currently equipment is required to regenerate the optical signal every 125 or so miles. This is good for us since more equipment is required but bad for the companies that build/operate the networks since it is expensive. There are start ups working on next generation stuff that require generation every 2000 or so mile as opposed to 125. Obviously less equipment would be required if this comes to pass. I was hoping to hear some discussion of this and its potential impact to JDSU.

Since I am betting big on JDSU long term I am more interested in them keeping at the fore front of technology than what the stock price is tomorrow.

All in all good CC and again thanks for the summary.

Marshall

Pat,.Re:.JDSU conference call, January 26, 2000

Many thanks for the CC notes. Sounds positive on all fronts. On Raman amplifiers, would these be licensed by SDLI?

Regarding the following statements from the CC:
Trend is to higher speed modulation and devices

Assumes this is long haul. Out at edge you don't need high speed.

Do you interpret this to mean that for the long haul routes, high speed devices aren't critical? This sounds like a recent familiar logical deduction by a gearhead? <ggg>

So much to think about, so little time! <g>

Thanks again for the CC notes.

Lee

thanxs for the write up, and for all your other posts. you provide an invaluable contribution to this technologically impaired investor. you must have burned a lot of midnight oil staying up posting, or partying celebrating jdsu's earnings.
