Mindmeld, of course I would not sit here and say that IP & packet based network is not going to make inroads........the point is that networks are going to EVOLVE towards IP, not forklifted overnight like what lot of IP telephony pundits/enthusiasts with very little understanding of how the Telecom market works.

Companies like Duetche Telecom have to invest in IP just to make sure they don't get blindsided........little like insurance but the Vocaltec investment ($50 million) is a CHUMP CHANGE to the PTT's........hardly what I would call betting the company!

Anyway, the key industry insiders are predicting anywhere from 5 to 10 years before any significant erosion of voice traffic to IP (NOT Internet Telephony) will occurr. And when it happens, it will happen in the backbone first and as far as the edge goes, that will even take longer for lots of good business/political reasons that I can't get into here.
