"sign of healthy management"

*did not manage warning
*underestimated y2k
*rough product transitions
*component issues

do you think they just found this out yesterday?

with such a "perfect" model....why was the driving force of management so "imperfect"? perhaps the first time in recent history that they have faced adversity?

long range prospects of revised growth , seems to be a change...

guess all is relative, and "health" is in the eye of the beholder....

They are also now stating that the days of 40-65 % growth are gone forever. To me that translates into the market re-valuing Price to Earnings wise Dell and the computer market. Those on this board who think that the 10-15% reduction in earnings and revenue growth rate going forward mean nothing and that this is a buying opportunity are perhaps victims of their own success with Dell. I currently have a small position and made money years ago in Dell and foolishly sold in the early 1990's. However, as foolish as that sale was in hindsight I think it would be equally foolish to hang on in hopes that the market will continue to put the high P/E on this stock when its founder and CEO have stated flatly that the growth rate is coming down....

It appears that Dell got caught in Intels catch 22 Floppermine problems and escalating DRAM pricing. This double whammy doesn't bode well for Dell this Q. I'd say you are right about the "dead" money scenario. Same for Gateway

Oh well...
This stock should drift, most likely south for a while.

<<The CC is a sign of healthy management. DELL's long range prospects are unchanged>>

Wrong!

DELL is becoming another loser in the industry like CPQ in couple years ago. The management did not do a good job. DELL needs a great deal of change in the management. The best thing now is to get ride of Mr. Dell. I said so 6 months ago and I am saying it again now. Whoever upgrades DELL today is totally out of his mind.
