Amazing -- I thought the VCD transport would cost that much. Yes, it's a fire sale.

1999 VCD player exports reached 2.93 million units
Sales of VCD players are on the rise in Shenzhen.
SHENZHEN ? The Shenzhen Customs reported that as of November last year, VCD players going out of the Shenzhen port totaled 2.93 million units, up by 7.24 times from 1998 export figures.

Most of the VCD players, priced on average at $36.45 apiece, shipped to Asia, particularly to buyers in Southeast Asia.

Despite the active R&D on DVD players, which is considered generally as the future video mainstream, the domestic VCD industry remains healthy. Its maturity in the areas of technology and production has enabled makers to lower prices significantly. The large supply of titles, both movies and audio, also contributed to the increase in export turnover.

According to Zhang Qing, of the export department of Xiamen Xiaxin Electronics Co. Ltd, "Many mainland firms were able to strengthen their competitiveness because of the closure of quite a number of Japan and Korea companies."
