13:00 ET Joseph Cohen Speaks : Goldman Sachs managing director (and perhaps Wall Steet's most revered bull), Abby Joseph Cohen, predicting an S&P 500 advance of just 8%-10% in 2000; sees Fed hiking rates by 50-75 basis points beginning at the Feb. 1-2 meeting... Appears market responding to Cohen's comments, as major indices have all plunged into negative territory: Dow -34, Nasdaq -27, S&P 500 -8. 12:39 ET Newport (NEWP) 75 +11 7/8 (+19%): Supplier of capital equipment to the fiber optics and photonics industry being picked up by the fiber players after company reported Q4 net of $0.31 a share, in line with the First Call mean, vs yr-ago EPS of $0.28; revenues rose 24% to $41.5 mln.... Also on the move is Corning (GLW 173 1/8 +17 1/8), which is making a new 52-week high today... NEWP also making a new high, on relatively light 279K; float 6.2 mln.
