Re: "It's all in the incremental processors! AMD shipped 35% more microprocessors in Q4 than in Q3...Intel shipped 3%(?)more in Q4...Big difference! How come? "

I'll take a wild stab at it. Maybe AMD was running at 75% of capacity and Intel was running at 97% of capacity? Ever think of that?

Re: "Not too many PWeeIII's made it to retail...Hence Intel's flat sequential growth in processors..."

Well at a minimum, Intel shipped > 2X the number of Athlons AMD shipped. That rating will widen substantially this quarter.

Nothing has happened since end of Q3 to suggest that the competitive gap between the PWeeIII and the spry Athy has narrowed...in fact, AMD now has 800's readily available, while Intel still espouses a some-time-in-the-future competitive PWeeIII...Michael Dell's public stance would seem to indicate he has once again been duped by future promises of a competitive PWeeIII...His private stance, if Dell is to remain competitive, is, I would guess, one of quiet and classy disengagement from Intel! (Let us not forget that disengagement does not come easy given the historical tie)...It may even take a Dell earnings bloodbath next quarter to exact the disengagement,...

niceguy, I understand what you are saying but I don't think M.Dell is in the position to be very classy. DELL has been screwing up all year and its shareholders are ready to form a lynching party. And its not like Intel is taking care of Dell...not when they have a ship date of March 7 for an 800.

And I don't believe M.Dell is that stupid...which leaves me to think that the boxmakers and bad business are the problem and not necessarily Intel.

I have no proof factual proof but this whole fiasco does not add up properly.

SpryGuy - Re: "! AMD shipped 35% more microprocessors in Q4 than in Q3...Intel shipped 3%(?)more in Q4"

That's a SIMPLETON argument - !!!

AMD shipped only 4.5 million x86 CPUs in Q399 - which was DOWN from 5.5 MILLION x86 CPUs in Q4/1998 !!!

No wonder Q4/1999 was better.

However -----

Year over year, AMD's 5.2 million x86 CPUs in Q4/1999 was DOWN 6 PER CENT from the 5.5 MILLION in Q4/1998 !!!!
