Yeah, I clicked your name, I'm from production planning background at TXN, & working 2nd shift now for a contract house. There is still massive amounts of through hole out there, & a big part of all electronics solder joints will always be flow solder.
At the (I believe it is old) 20k tons of solder a year, that is better than 14.2k troy oz additional silver every year.
& like I said, just the retooling of rework & touch-up irons buying the more expensive solder should hurt some companies greatly. They, of course, will pass on the costs(inflationary?) to the consumer, which should limit the ever lower electronics costs somewhat. It might even slow the economy a bit, if consumers can afford less electronic goodies.
