Korea Thrunet to Achieve 5.3 Million in Homes Passed, Well Ahead of Its Competitors
SEOUL, Korea and NEW YORK, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Korea Thrunet Co., Ltd. (Nasdaq: KOREA - news) today reported that it will become the first broadband Internet service provider that will cover almost all major metropolitan areas in South Korea. Korea Thrunet will complete deployment of its first phase network coverage by the end of February, achieving 5.3 million in homes passed. Home passed refers to the number of homes that potentially can be serviced by a cable system.

As of December 31, 1999, Korea Thrunet leads the broadband Internet access market with 134,740 paying subscribers. Up to October of 1999, Korea Thrunet was adding 5,000 new residential subscribers a month. The Company is currently adding more than 20,000 residential paying subscribers per month. The nationwide coverage will be crucial in keeping Korea Thrunet ahead of its competition in the race to penetrate the broadband market.

The two-way Internet connection is only possible at Korea Electric Power Company's (KEPCO) HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coaxial) network in Korea. Korea Thrunet, up until now, has been providing 2.8 million homes passed with its broadband internet access and Hanaro covers 1.2 million homes passed, out of 4.2 million homes passed that is covered by KEPCO exclusively. In those areas where there is no KEPCO's HFC network, Korea Thrunet is aggressively building its own two-way cable network at substantially lower cost, by leveraging its long-term leasing contract with KEPCO for its ancillary facilities. As a result, Korea Thrunet, by the end of February, will be covering most of the major metropolitan areas and increase home-pass number to 5.3 million from 2.8 million.

The Korean nationwide cable system is served by 77 System Operators (SO). 55 of the 77 SOs have signed network agreements with KEPCO, 21 have singed with Korea Telecom (KT) and 1 remains independent. As of January 27th, 2000, Korea Thrunet has exclusive agreements with 42 SOs, up from 36 as of January 5th. This includes 34 out of 55 Sos using KEPCO's HFC network and 8 Sos in the areas served by KT. KT's network is not ready for the two-way Internet connection. Korea Thrunet is building its own network in those 8 regions.

Korea Thrunet plans to leverage its nationwide network to continue building the largest broadband customer base in Korea, and provide a broad array of services through broadband portal, content, and community.

lee, I am so tired of the analysts trying to figure out what number is going to trigger a rate rise...I think it was you that said Uncle Al's decision depends on my much he enjoyed his bath that morning.

This market worries worse than my mother. Needs a little prozac I believe. Either that or so many of the skittish traders all do!

CNBC is blaming the volatility on the daytraders again. Just heard Tom Costello say it. We all know this is BS, the institutions are trading these same stocks in huge blocks that we are trading in "baby blocks" of 100 shares or so.

analysts - lee, earlier, you asked about analysts. just my take, but in terms of 'believing', the only one i believe (in terms of statements, not price targets) is dan niles.

i've used blodgett and kiggen as 'factors' in determining what the overall market sentiment is. when it's massive bullishness, stocks will hugely jump based on their say-so. when it's not, the stocks won't. kiggen said 'cmrc to the moon' yesterday, i think, and it didn't...

i find it humorous when analysts try to find some 'fundamental' reason to justify their technical analysis reading...
