Tokyo stocks rise by midday, powered by high-techs
TOKYO, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Tokyo stocks rose by midday on Friday, powered by high-tech issues which appeared to shrug off overnight falls in their U.S. counterpart.

The launch of several Japanese investment trusts on Friday and a major investment trust next Wednesday spurred buying interest in information technology issues which many analysts expect to gain heavy weighting in the portfolios, traders said.

The benchmark Nikkei average of leading 225 shares rose 121.30 points or 0.63 percent to 19,331.02.

``Large-cap newcomers are currently the key driving force ahead of launches of investment trusts today and early next month,' said Hidenori Kawasaki, general manager at Kokusai Securities Co's equity department.

Reflecting this, gains in the capital-weighted TOPIX (^TOPX - news) outpaced those in the Nikkei, which does not include such key high-tech shares as mobile phone operator NTT Docomo and Softbank Corp .

The TOPIX jumped 19.54 points or 1.16 percent to 1,705.44.
