Healthy Kidney Removed From Patient

LONDON (Reuters) - The condition of an elderly British man whose healthy kidney
was mistakenly removed by surgeons deteriorated Thursday as embarrassed
hospital officials launched an inquiry into the botched operation.

``He had an uncomfortable night. Last night we described his condition as critical
but stable. He is now critical,' a spokesman for Morriston Hospital in Swansea,
Wales, told Reuters.

The 69-year-old man, who has not been identified, was transferred to Morriston
after undergoing the operation at the Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli, south
Wales.

He underwent surgery Monday to remove a diseased kidney. But a surgeon took
out the pensioner's healthy kidney by mistake, leaving him with just the damaged
organ.

The hospital later described the mix-up as an ``adverse clinical incident.'

Relatives of the man, who is an unmarried with no immediate family, are reported
to have consulted a lawyer.

Mike Jones, the chief executive of the Carmarthenshire NHS Trust, said an inquiry
had been mounted and the surgeon suspended from his normal duties.

``We simply don't understand the reason why this happened,' he said.

The hospital said no similar operations would be carried out until the investigation
was completed.

A family friend of the patient told reporters that it was 'almost unbelievable that
they operated on the wrong one.'
