I look at the forest and ask, What will cause CMGI to move again?

Big gains come when there is huge demand, and the mutual funds telegraphed their moves when CMGI rose so dramatically in the last six weeks of 1999. It wasn't news that drove up CMGI, it was massive buying by the funds. For whatever reason, in hindsight we can see they wanted to do their buying before year end. The run continued into the new year, for exactly one day. When the funds ended their buying there was just not enough demand to keep the run going.

January has been a time for people to take profits. I can't fault anyone for making money, but many and probably most who are so inclined have likely taken this opportunity by now.

So, what will spark the next run? Well, the funds remind me of the person who goes to an all you can eat place and piles food high on plate after plate. An hour later, we're not likely to see him running to the icebox for more.

If retail investors are to be relied upon, what call will they heed? The wonderful market is telling us. News about a new billion dollar fund is greeted with a yawn, and perhaps rightfully so. CMGI already has funds and the new one hasn't bought anything yet. Maybe it's right to wait and see what they come up with.

News about China didn't grab too many people's attention either. Maybe the market is right about that too. China is good long term, but if you look at the daily lives of all those people, it's not clear that a majority of them are ready to buy a computer next month and go online just because CMGI cut a deal and a few people on SI think it's hot, hot, hot.

Near term, if funds are stuffed and we must rely on retail, we've got to look into the future and ask what might get their attention. In short, it's got to be something that is big, obvious and trendy. What might that be?

Well, the AV IPO is coming up pretty soon. Note all the excitement and questions by new investors we saw here last December -- so many a new thread had to be started for that topic. With CMGI's decline this month enthusiasm slipped, but note the recent interest.

Also, I just checked the news stories on Yahoo by clicking on All Headlines. Going back several weeks, the news stories with Alta Vista in the headline are sparse -- until today when 5 stories suddenly appear:

(1) FOXSports.com to supply sports content to AltaVista - Reuters Securities

(2) FoxSports.com scores pact with AltaVista - at CBS MarketWatch

(3) Move.com and AltaVista to Create Co-branded Real Estate Channel - PR Newswire

(4) AltaVista targets B2B e-commerce with new unit - at CNET News.Com

(5) AltaVista Signs Exclusive Deal With FOXSports.com - PR Newswire

I'm not ready to say this is a buy signal. So far it's just Alta Vista, Shmalta Vista. So far we may just be storing power. Putting gas in the tank is nice, for sure, but you need the spark to get going. So I patiently wait for stories that mention Alta Vista and IPO in the same breath, and most of all for stories that mention CMGI, Alta Vista, and One Of The Biggest IPO's Of The Year in the same breath.

Guess you could say I am breathlessly waiting.

Still, it's retail investors I am waiting for, not the heavy hitters. I can't count on them for huge buying, just buying. Other factors count too. An up market in February will help, especially if people get excited enough to ignite IPO fever. But we're not seeing that right now, either.

So I wait.
