Chaz, open standards has changed the very nature of the commercial IT market dramatically since 1988 or so. PCs gradually became commodities. If a manufacturer provided a quality PC with competitive performance, warranty service, and reasonable delivery at a lower price, they got the business.

Such is not the case, yet, for communications infrastructure. It is the case for such things a modems, but for routers, switches, etc., low price is still not the driver. Service and reliability with a proven set of reference accounts is key there.

Software is a totally different story. Features/function and relevant references are the first set of hurdles. Then price may be considered.
