Craig and Thread,

Ausaduer, I don't recall any comments here on the news about UMC's technology deal with IBM to develop 0.13u chips within a year. If you could make flash that small, it would cut chip costs by 75%.

I am not versed in any of the finer aspects of silicon wafer manufacturing. Several quarters back Eli talked about the leading edge technology that UMC had to offer including such things as smaller dimensioned chips (0.18 micron and beyond) & copper interconnects. SanDisk has these technologies at their disposal if they so desire. Also, there will be a shift toward 300mm wafers. I expect the Dominion fab will be a conglomeration of all the experience that UMC and SanDisk and Toshiba have jointly accumulated. SanDisk has learned from its past. The astounding rate of the 256Mbit/D2 adoption and implementation is a testimony to this.

Dr. Harari also talked about "shrinking" to squeeze more production capacity out of the fixed wafer supply during the upcoming quarters. I am not sure exactly what that means. It may be a reference to your original comments. I think it is reasonable to expect that the 8F fab at UMC and the previously unannounced foundry agreement (with another source) that was mentioned in the c.c. will employ leading edge technology.

Finally, don't forget that we still have 512 Mbit and 1 gigabit products in the wings and early visions of more advance MLC techniques (D3?) in the future if the investment in INVOX can be leveraged.
