Well I did preface my meanderings as my 'fantasy' <g!> I was stretching to the extreme about the MSFT part but my goal was to make the point that SEBL could come away with some of the 'best stuff' to sell (i.e. supply chain and CRM) in a e-commerce app.

Don't get me wrong. IBM is going to do great too. They will get to sell a truck load of the 'back plumbing' necessary to take those orders coming through the e-commerce portal and run their mfg (etc.) software off of it. It's a win-win situation. I just think Siebel is in a position to 'win' a bit more. But then again, no one knows the % cuts everyone is going to receive when 'xyz' modules sell now do we? For all we know Tom is giving the stuff away to IBM. I, somehow, don't think so though ;-)

My two cents on competitors... I think TD has an excellent point about the 'meat' (read robust functionality) of the software not being there for these newer e-commerce offerings. I may have misread his post (it's not in front of me now) NOR am I an expert on b2b software so I cannot comment yet on this.

What I do know from working in the industry for quite awhile is that it 'aint' easy designing, writing and testing the stuff.. let alone implementing it. My 'gut' tells me, ignorant as it is at this point in time, that the bigger back office vendors have an advantage because of the functionality they have in their current offerings. They already 'know how to do it'.. and that is worth alot.

I would guess Oracle vs. IBM/Siebel vs. SAP? (they don't seem to be doing very well lately, their product is grossly complex for the internet, their company moves slowly and they don't seem to have the marketing/sales savvy that some of their American counter parts do) vs. possibly (this is a big fat 'maybe') PeopleSoft/Vantive and then 1 possibly 2 of the present b2b firms out there.

When all is said and done I would bet Siebel/IBM vs. Oracle and maybe one other 'new comer'. It would be a good match up. I would pay good money to see this fight. Actually I AM going to pay good $$$ Lol!

What do you guys think? Let's talk more about the competition. What do you think of Oracle's e-commerce offerings? Any other present b2b vendor out there seem in the same league as Oracle and IBM/Siebel? We have one vote for Siebel buying the necessary supply chain software.

The more I think about the 'buying' issue I just wonder. We already sold something to GM/Saturn. What did we sell? Normally you don't resell something you haven't purchased yet. Wouldn't the deal have already been announced if Siebel had bought someone? Perhaps the 'first cut' at the supply chain portal (perhaps a sales configurator first?) was built in-house.

FYI... Please understand I am REALLY guessing how all of these dots are getting connected. However I've found over the years I am usually closer to 'the truth' than way off base concerning such things. The way I figure it, right or wrong, or more likely someplace in the middle. The more we discuss these types of issues the clearer the 'big picture' will be. Along the way our assumptions can be tested with every new 'fact' that comes out.

In the mean time we are chatting about Siebel, keeping the thread alive, and discussing something other than that the price went up 1/4 of a point two minutes ago! <vbg>
