( BW)(MA-EMC-CORPORATION)(EMC) EMC Announces Expanded Roles for Global Sales
Executives

Business/Technology Editors

HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 28, 2000-- Veteran EMC Sales
Leaders Deploying Best Practices Globally As EMC

Grows to Meet Rising Demand

In a continuing effort to extend its market leadership and broaden its global reach, EMC
Corporation today announced expanded roles for the three veteran sales executives who lead the
world's largest and most advanced storage-dedicated sales force.

EMC, the world's leading provider of enterprise storage systems, software and services, today
named John McCarthy, a 14-year EMC veteran, Senior Vice President of North American Sales.
William Scannell, also a 14-year EMC veteran, has been named Senior Vice President of Sales for
Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America. James Sullivan, a 12-year EMC veteran, has been
named Senior Vice President of Asia Pacific Sales. All three report to Michael A. Ruffolo,
Executive Vice President of Global Sales, Services and Marketing. EMC also announced that
Harold R. Dixon, Senior Vice President of Global Sales since May 1999, has left the company to
pursue other interests.

"The opportunities for EMC have never been better and our sales, services and marketing teams
have never been stronger," said Ruffolo. "The addition of CLARiiON storage systems to our
market-leading family of Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems provides the information
infrastructure of choice for organizations as they fight for success in the new economy. Our sales
organization delivers that business value more effectively than any in the world. John, Bill and Jim
have all been with EMC for more than a decade and have experience in leading the teams that help
customers maximize the use of their information to achieve business results. They have each been a
major force behind EMC's growth over the past decade, and I am confident they will have an even
greater impact in helping EMC continue its global growth."

EMC also announced the promotions of three other veteran EMC sales executives to the Global
Sales, Services and Marketing management team. Thomas Heiser, who joined EMC in 1984, has
been promoted to Vice President, Global Channels. James Fitzgerald, who joined EMC in 1983,
has been named Vice President, Global Sales Productivity. Mark Quigley, a five-year EMC
veteran, has been promoted to Vice President, Global Field Sales, Planning and Operations.

Before taking over North American sales last year, McCarthy was EMC's Vice President of
Mid-Atlantic Region Sales, where he was responsible for sales operations in the Northeastern U.S.
and the Federal government. McCarthy has held a number of other sales management positions at
EMC. He is a graduate of Providence College in Providence, R.I.

Scannell became Vice President of Sales Operations for Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin
America last year. He was previously Vice President of Southern and Midwestern Sales in the
U.S., and has held a number of other sales management positions at EMC. He is a graduate of
Northeastern University in Boston, Mass., and is based in the United Kingdom.

Sullivan has been Vice President of Asia Pacific sales since last year. Sullivan is responsible for
increasing the company's presence in a diverse group of countries, including Japan, the People's
Republic of China, all of Southeast Asia and the South Pacific. Prior to this assignment, he was
Vice President of EMC's Western U.S. Sales, where he implemented programs that successfully
established EMC as a key infrastructure provider for numerous Internet and e-commerce
customers. He has held several sales management positions at EMC. He is a graduate of Boston
College and is now based in Singapore.

Further follow up on the CC.

Laura Coniglairo asked a rather long winded question that to me tried to highlight a point of hers rather than ask an actual question.

Here's my paraphrase of the question: "For three quarters now revenues on the hardware side has been short vs. the software side. Is that '99 specific or has hardware growth permanently slowed?"

Now this question/statement wouldn't be a surprise if it came from an analyst that was neutral or negative on EMC, but Laura has EMC on Goldman's recommended list.
