RESEARCH ALERT-Varian Semi earns forecast raised

NEW YORK, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Credit Suisse First Boston and Warburg Dillon Read said on Friday they raised their earnings estimates on Varian Semiconductor Equipment Inc. VSEA .

-- On Thursday, Varian Semiconductor reported first-quarter earnings of $8.4 million, or 26 cents per diluted share, compared with $4.3 million, or 14 cents per diluted share in the year-ago period. First Call/Thomson Financial, which tracks analysts' forecasts, listed its estimate as 19 cents a share.

-- CSFB raised its fiscal 2000 EPS estimate to $1.65 from $0.85.

-- CSFB raised its fiscal 2001 EPS estimate to $2.50 from $1.45.

-- Warburg raised its fiscal 2000 EPS estimate to $1.52 from $0.88.

-- Warburg set its fiscal 2001 EPS estimate at $2.60.

-- Warburg raised its 12-month price target to $85 from $30.
