Don't think it is a forecasting problem. They just flat out don't have the capacity to build as much as the market wanted last Q. This is true for flash in general. That is why companies are now building more capacity. The big question which my previous two posts addresses is, will this new capacity eventually overwhelm the market, a la DRAMs? Not any time soon, for sure. Next year some time? Hard to say, but, as I said earlier, at least plausibly not, at least not to the extent of the DRAM crisis, and, in any case, Sandisk has at least some protection built in through their IP and royalty agreements.

Appears to be a market forcasting problem! Not only a capacity problem.


As you stated, market forecasting may be at issue. It is hard to get excited about spending millions of dollars on advertising when you can't meet demand.

I think you should give some credit to SanDisk for the intentional shift toward CF to meet holiday digital camera demand. I have already gone into detail about this in an earlier post.

Finally, I am taking a crash course in branding right now, Binx, and plan to post over the weekend. I expect we have many Thread members with some first hand experience in PR/marketing/advertising/branding who may feel inclined to comment as the discussion heats up.
