Mike,

I have a question on the capital gains and tax rate issue.

The property casualty companies always break out earnings/or losses on underwriting, from investment income, from capital gains. That way you can clearly see what's going on from an operations point of view.

I'm aware that Intel, Microsoft, GE, and I suppose the banks and brokers have been padding real core operating earnings with bull market capital gains, but I am wondering how widespread the practice is? Are there really a lot of companies taking gains like that or is it concentrated in high-tech and financial services? (I also know about the pension spillovers.)
