Don:

CPQ took a $5.0 billion writedown when they bought DEC.
Also, they took more writeoffs when Herr Eck got the chop.
(could not have happened to a more deserving natural born liar).

In spite of all this accounting room, I will bet against this forecast. Their marketing guys must be on a very potent brand of cold medicine. Emachines is still busily eating lunches out there, especially in the low end pricing territory.

CPQ can limp alone, maintaining a semblance of its former strength through accounting games, but the past 18 months have witnessed terrible damage to the company's reputation out in the field, and this will not be easily repaired. The company has also been very slow to respond to the continuing pricing pressures, (which used to be a strength, at least in terms of maintaining market share).

The comments look like a stock price support mechanism to me.

Best, Earlie
