There was an article in yesterday's NY Times talking about why a Canadian telephone company (I can't recall the name) was planning to spin off it's holdings in NT to shareholders because the ownership of those shares hadn't added to the value of the Canadian company. I think that speaks to your backdoor strategy. You might find the article interesting.
