Snow Shoveling Argument Ends in Murder

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A Philadelphia man allegedly shot and killed a neighbor who
complained about where he was piling shoveled snow after this week's monster winter storm on
the East Coast, police said on Thursday.

Louis Mockewich, 34, was charged late on Wednesday with murdering Michael Kirkpatrick, 31,
who lived behind his row house in southwest Philadelphia.

Mockewich was shoveling snow in the back of his house and piling it up next to a Ford pickup
owned by Kirkpatrick. The victim's father went outside to complain and an argument began.

When Kirkpatrick came out to join the dispute, Mockewich allegedly drew a pistol and shot him
once in the right shoulder. The bullet passed through his chest.

Kirkpatrick, an elementary school football coach at a nearby Roman Catholic school, also was
armed when he came out of the house but did not brandish his weapon, police said.

Neighbors described Mockewich as an eccentric but helpful man who had taken it upon himself
this week to shovel sidewalks in front of several row houses in the neighborhood.

Both men had legal permits to carry handguns, police said.
