Mary, Re: "If growth in Europe, Asia Pacific, and Japan is anything like Q4 99 going forward, there is no discrepancy between Dell's
guidance for Q1'00 and Intel's for Q1'00 (and possible sellout)."

Mary, since we're into behavioral traits of people by trade, let me exhibit my engineering background by asking a dumb question to make sure I know exactly what you are saying: could you have worded the above to say that 'in spite of Dell's soft guidance for Q1, Intel could still have a possible sellout Q1 because Europe, Asia Pacific, and Japan look to be buying strongly in Q1'?

The problem I had with your wording was having the term no discrepancy linking a bad thing and a good thing. Now you know why engineers can be a pain in the, well, you know.

Mary, thanks for the help. sometime you'll have to teach me how to format a table on SI.

I'm glad you highlighted the factor that I thought was the strongest factor at work (geographic variation). The fact that we could generate a list of additional (and sometimes hard to get one's arms around) variables speaks to the inherent complexity of forecasting the PC business and Intel's sales as a derivative.

There's a big risk embedded in trying to simplify something that isn't simple.

Thanks again for the clarity.
regards,
jh
