Here is a weekend report on disk drive pricing from a sample of retail distributor drives. The drives include 352 samples from 6 different distributors.

Disk drive prices remained stable last week. The weighted average desktop drive price dropped 0.4% last week. The average price of drives less than 11 gb dropped 0.2%. The average price of drives between 11 and 21 gb remained even. The average price of drives over 21 gb dropped 1.6%. The average SCSI drive (enterprise) increased 0.1%.

The weighted average desktop drive price dropped 1.3% since the beginning of the quarter (1 month). The average price of drives less than 11 gb dropped 0.2%. The average price of drives between 11 and 21 gb dropped 1.0%. The average price of drives over 21 gb dropped 4.1%. The average SCSI drive (enterprise) increased 0.7%.

The price drops in desktop drives for the week may be skewed by large price drops in some IBM desktop drives. This skewing may occur because IBM has higher prices in desktop drives. They make up 18.6% of the samples but may not make up a percentage of sales that large.

Last quarter the average weighted monthly price drop was 1.5% for desktop drives. The average monthly price drop was 2.7% for enterprise drives. We have yet to see the seasonal price drop that normally occurs at the end of the 4th calendar quarter. Last year we experienced seasonal price drops in two parts. One price drop occurred in mid December and one occurred at the end of January.

Mark
