I agree with the margin call scenario, JGoren. I think a lot of QCOM and JDSU longs will be getting margin calls tonight and we'll see more weakness Monday morning. Unfortunately. But I will be backing up my little SUV as we approach 100 or go below it.

rehow much is due to margin calls?
This happened last May. When I had a margin call, I called Fidelity and asked how many they were: they said triple the usual amount. They didn't give figures. It was eventually over anyway, July was pretty good, August of course was awful and then we went to our October crash and our November and December exuberance.
So even if it's margin call time, that too will end.

I think the market will (I hope it will) recover next week. I think there will be a rebound of some stocks on Monday (such as JDSU). I think QCOM will be battered for a while, by virtue of its obscene runup in December. I've said this on Voltaire's porch, but Tom (Voltaire) urged me to sell ALL my winter and spring calls by Jan 3 because increased liquidity, volatility and a correction could erase much of my profits. It was an unusual situation, before a 4-1 split. He turned out to be correct. He isn't always right, but he often has a good sense of market dynamics. So I learned a good lesson about speculating--i.e. take my obscene profits off the table quick!

Anyway, I've tried to stay calm and what I did was sell covered calls yesterday and bought them back today, made a quick buck. May sell the whole lot again at a lower strike next week. Also sold JDSU puts yesterday and twice today as we kept plummeting. It'll never make up for the air let out of the balloon since Jan 3, but it's enough to eat on!

how much more there may be to go

Of course I have no way to know, but I fear we are near the beginning of a process (a positive feedback in a negative direction) that will wring much of the speculation out of the market.

BTW a belated thanks for your posts during the "Holy Wars" circa '97.

There is a 2-3 days delay effect on margin calls. There is a few more down days for sure. This things just feed on itself.
