Rich, the European Union set GSM as the industry standard for continental Europe. You are absolutely right about the situation in the USA as well, a hodgepodge of systems. The wisdom of having a bureau dictate a standard as opposed to a "leveling" of competitive forces is evident in this case. Deregulation needs to be revisited from time to time, IMO.
