Wireless Sector Continues Explosive Growth; w-Trade Technologies' CEO Points to Convergence of Two Major Trends

NEW YORK, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- As evidenced by the recent IPO-successes of Phone.com, Aether Systems and most recently 724 Solutions, businesses worldwide are realizing the critical nature of extending their customer reach through wireless channels, according to w-Trade Technologies' CEO Donna R. Oliva.

''When we brought to market the first wireless e-commerce application two years ago, we knew that wireless commerce had the potential of rivaling the Internet for its impact on society,'' said Oliva. ''As the pioneer in this industry, we are excited to see so many companies coming on board recently and realizing such great success even in the concept stage.''

The explosive growth of the market for wireless commerce applications is fueled by the convergence of two major trends, according to Oliva:

The almost universal adoption of the use of mobile devices, as evidenced by the unprecedented growth in the number of wireless subscribers. According to the Yankee Group, there were more than 469 million wireless subscribers globally at the end of 1999. This number is expected to continue to grow to 1.26 billion within five years. These wireless subscribers are driving a skyrocketing demand for all kinds of mobile devices -- including cell phones, pagers, PDAs, portable PCs and hybrid devices.

The universal acceptance of electronic business transactions, as evidenced by the dramatic shift to electronic payments AND the explosion of the global Internet economy. Today, electronic payments account for nearly 90 percent of the dollar value of transactions (according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago). This growth has been made possible by electronic funds transfers (EFT) systems ranging from the now-familiar automated teller machines to touch-tone and interactive voice recognition (IVR) systems, to PC and online banking.

''The wireless revolution is more than just an extension of the Internet Economy,'' says Oliva. ''It's a completely new paradigm that will change the way we all communicate, receive information and conduct business. And it's happening now.''
