Kash,

<The price war is just starting. Just look at these coppermine 500 prices from Dell:

Complete Pentium© III System For Only $999! >

IMHO, this is no price war. This is inventory clearance. Note that AMD is not selling any 500s and no that many 550s.

In a month when the next K6-2/K6-2+ speed grades are introduced, Intel would have serious problems selling the 500s.

Kash Re <<The price war is just starting.>>

I disagree. This in not price war IMO. Just selling low end of the MHz spectrum for discount.

Also DRAM spot prices have dropped a lot. I also imagine other components such as the graphics cards are also gotten a lot cheaper over the past few weeks.

CPU pricing is relatively firm at the slowest time of the year.

RE:"Dimension L500r

Now you can get a complete system solution with a Pentium III 500MHz processor, 64MB of SDRAM memory, 15" monitor, speakers, and a modem for only $999. It's all backed by Dell's award-winning service and support with 3-year limited warranty!4 "

Yet another reason to dump Dell, they are going down to compete with E-Machines...At least we know Intel can yield 500MHZ and 550 MHZ Floppermines.

Jim

OTOH, The Athlons from Gateway at 600, 700 and 800 are in a higher class. Nice to have that speed...

Re: "Pentium© III Processor at 550E MHz"

What does the "E" signify in 550E MHz? Does the processor operate at 550 MHz?

Thanks,
