FWIW here is my take on the conference call.

QCOM is rolling out 1x faster than anticipated. Wireless carriers are expecting to receive handsets with 1x chips in them starting in the second half of the year. In fact, I got the impression that management feels that most carries will demand handsets with 1xrt because they will get an immediate doubling of efficiency as soon as the base stations are upgraded. This means that it would be foolish for the carriers to stock up on lesser handsets and sell them into their markets when better ones are so close at hand.

They are going to "just-in-time" delivery of handsets so that the inventory stays low in preparation for the 1xrt handsets.

The current slow down is in anticipation of an explosion in demand for 1xrt. Carriers will demand only 1xrt handsets and QCOM is the only ASIC supplier with that technology. No one else is even close. NOK and Ericy will either buy ASICs from QCOM or be cut out of the supply stream for CDMA handsets.

Additionally, Japan and Korea will be using 1xrt at 300k/sec data rates in the second half of this year. That is the beginning of 3G in the year 2000. Go back and check predictions of when this would take place. Most were talking about 2002 or later. What do you think will happen when the rest of the world suddenly realizes that CDMA works as promised right now. China will settle for nothing less than what Japan and Korea have. All the nonsense of Europe having the lead in wireless technology will be exposed for the bull that it is.

On the topic of China. There is a general sense that China steals technology rather than buys it. The current negotiations with China should result in the putting to rest of the fear of China stealing CDMA technology. When announced, this will be huge news. Also, sales to China are not included in any company projections at this time.

I've heard people talk about the tornado having started. We've only seen a little wind storm. The tornado starts with China, 1xrt and HDR. What stock will you own when it begins?
