EMC buying DGN was smart. Dell investing in StorageNetworks will be a loser, IMO.

<<A $21 billion business last year, the storage service provider market will reach $24 billion this year and $40 billion in 2003, according to market researcher IDC. >>

That's not growth! 15% Y/Y for 2000, then 18% for the next 3 years with numerous additional competitors coming along with fresh (lower cost) systems and infrastructure. Let alone entire new technologies that will cast aside the early players. It makes sense only for someone who thinks he has the new technology and who wants a window on what else is going on. You don't need to put up $40 to $50 m to get that view (I don't know Dell's portion of the $103 m).

Re: an earlier post that Dell should follow SBC and announce a large ($4 billion?) stock buyback. Misguided, or the result of a tumultuous week for the longs. If Dell misses any one of the next 3 quarters and comes in with 78 cents for FY2001, the stock could go below $20 IMO. To buy at $32 or higher (or sell puts) before they have a clearer field of vision, would be amateurish. TM wouldn't do it.
