The prevalence of paternalism was not the issue, and, in fact, the point was drawn that there were elements of the work that were agreeable to some radicals. The point is that southern agrarianism was anti- capitalist; that many people in the South were prepared to defend slavery as superior to free labor, even for whites; and that the anti- capitalist Left found elements of this argument sympathetic.......
