Interesting fact.

Hewlett-Packard Says Printers, Imaging Generated 61% of Its Profit in 1999
quote.bloomberg.com
Palo Alto, California, Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Hewlett-Packard Co., the No. 2 computer maker, said its printer and ink-cartridge business contributed 61 percent of operating profit in fiscal 1999, confirming speculation that the unit is its most profitable.

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Hewlett-Packard said operating profit in the printer unit was $2.3 billion in the year ended Oct. 31, compared with total operating profit of $3.8 billion. Computer-systems sales generated operating profit of $856 million, or about 23 percent. All figures are before taxes.

The results are striking because computers and printers bring in almost the same amount in sales for the company. Sales of printers and related supplies totalled $18.9 billion, while sales of computer systems were $18.4 billion. Analysts estimate that some of Hewlett-Packard's printer supplies carry profit margins of 50 percent or more.
